Martian Languages

Koline

Koline is part of the Gaaryani family of languages. It is a pastiche of Son-Gaaryani and several other languages. It is the trade language spoken by most canal boatmen, merchants and cloud ship crews. It is a primitive and basic language but also easily grasped.

Memnite

Memnite is part of the Bootnai family of Canal Martian languages.

Bootnai

The Bootnai family of Canal Martian languages and is heavily inflected, tonal and subtle in its shades of meaning.  It is sadly notoriously difficult to learn for humans. Its two principle languages are Hespesian and Memnite. Hespesian is spoken in the Mare Tyrrhenium and Mare Cimmerium regions. Memnite is spoken throughout the Mare Sirenium, Electris and Syria extending as far as the upper reaches of the Coprates.

Español Rojo

The language in the city of Villa Real and the local region is Memnite, It is part of the Bootnai family of Canal Martian languages and is heavily inflected, tonal and subtle in its shades of meaning. It is sadly notoriously difficult to learn for humans. While a few gifted Spaniards mastered the tongue most did not and this led to problems in communicating with the very people they wished to trade with. Enterprising local Martians soon became fluent in Spanish but over time a pidgin Spanish commonly called Español Rojo, Red Spanish, developed. When the City of Valx became the Spanish Colonial City of Villa Real it became the language of government and is now relatively common amongst the populace especially amongst those that work in the administration, commerce and military. Like most pidgin languages it is based on a primary tongue, Spanish, but is simplified and has a local words mixed in from Memnite and Koline, the trade tongue of Mars. By using it basic communication is simplified between the Spanish and their local Martian subjects though it is hardly a language for poetry. Spanish and other European troops on the way to Mars are taught the basics of Español Rojo but it is best learnt on the job through trial and error.
